About NOCHE

The Northeast Ohio Council on Higher Education ("NOCHE")

Founded in 1951, NOCHE's (www.noche.org) mission is to mobilize the higher education and business communities for collective action that advances region economic development. NOCHE is leading the effort to increase college attainment in the region through the Talent Dividend and is connecting employers with college students through its signature internship program, NEOintern (www.neointern.net).

"If the Ohio of the future wants an advantage in a more technical, more competitive, more difficult world, no better insurance can underwrite it than quality education today."

- Ralph M. Besse, Chair
Cleveland Commission on Higher Education
1956-1969, 1970-1971

These words are as true today as they were in 1951, when Ralph M. Besse and Frank E. Joseph founded what is now known as NOCHE-the Northeast Ohio Council on Higher Education.  NOCHE focuses on a core philosophy: quality higher education creates a better educated pool of talent to foster and support economic growth in Northeast Ohio.

Promoting Higher Education

NOCHE's member institutions include large, research-based universities, mid-sized schools with graduate programs, liberal arts colleges, community colleges, and programs focused on specific academic disciplines or professional fields. Collectively, these institutions enroll 209,000 degree-seeking students from across the United States and the world, grant more than 26,000 degrees annually, and employ more than 27,000 faculty, administrators and staff. Member institutions play an essential role in the strength of the economy.

By instructing and developing a productive work force and conducting research that leads to the creation of new business products and processes, these colleges and universities are a driving force in this region.  Simply put, a vibrant higher education community is vital for a strong local economy.  For more than 50 years, NOCHE has provided the vehicle to bring higher education and business together to further this principle.

Driving Business and Higher Education Collaboration

NOCHE is dedicated to forging important connections between higher education and the business community.  A strong link between higher education and industry fosters the development of strong, well-aligned curricula with hands-on learning opportunities, training programs, research, and ready talent for regional employers.  The opportunities for collaboration between NOCHE's member institutions and the business community are limitless.

Serving Northeast Ohio

NOCHE has programs that benefit prospective and current students, member institutions, and Northeast Ohio industry and businesses.  Whether you are a current or prospective student looking for information on Northeast Ohio's fine colleges and universities or seeking internship opportunities, an educational institution looking to promote your programs, or an industry or business seeking to work with higher education to cultivate a well-qualified work force, NOCHE is committed to providing you with the assistance you need.
